10 Tips to Make a Good Website Design
If you are designing your own website or even having one designed for you, it is important that you know what a good website design looks like. You want your site to be a pleasurable browsing experience for everyone who lands on it. So what you may think is a great idea for your site may not be popular with your visitors. Before you launch your website it is critical that you read through these 10 tips to make a good website design.
1. Text and Background Color Combinations Are Important
The color of your text in relation to the background color is very important. You want a site with text that is easy to read without hurting your visitors’ eyes. The worst color combination you can use is red text on a blue background. Other bad color combinations are light text on a light-colored background and dark text on a dark background. It is best to stay with a white background and dark colored text. However, some sites use a black background with white text which is acceptable.
2. Avoid Pop-up Windows
Pop-up windows are installed on many sites for various reasons. Most are used to collect email addresses for future contact. However, most people hate them and a lot of individuals will quickly click out if they see a pop-up window.
3. No Music or Animation
Avoid using music, excessive animations or other types of eye candy on your site. These things may take longer to load, and most people find them extremely annoying. Annoying potential customers is never a good thing.
4. Avoid Excessive Advertising
You may be using your website to make money through Adwords or similar programs. But if your site is covered in Adwords, banners and other forms of advertising, then you can expect people to get off your site in a hurry.
5. Don’t Have a Counter
There is no good reason to have a counter on your site that shows how many visitors it gets. However, you should use a good tracking software that monitors your website traffic but keeps in hidden from your visitors.
6. Make Your Site Easy to Navigate
Nothing is more frustrating to your customer than not knowing where to find what they are looking for on your website. You should always include descriptive links, a search button and an obvious link back to the home page.
7. Use Space Well
It may be tempting to use every bit of space on your web page, but it makes it hard for the visitor to read. Therefore, it is a good idea to use short paragraphs with ample spacing.
8. Don’t Toot Your Own Horn
You or your site may have won numerous awards but don’t fill your home page with excessive talk about yourself or your awards. Your site should be talking to the customer and letting them know what you can do for them.
9. Make Your Site Consistent
Once your site is designed, avoid constantly moving things around. Return visitors will become confused and frustrated.
10. Give Your Site Staying Power
Make your site useful and people will find it. Update your site regularly, put out a newsletter that people can sign up for and always have quality content. These are just a few ideas to make your site relevant so that it remains a favorite place to visit.
